First Tee of WNY to Provide Golf Experience for Inner City Youth at Historic Park Country Club

The 2015 CCS Oncology Kids First Golf Classic is set to be the largest turnout at the event in its 11-year history, and The First Tee of WNY prides itself on hosting an event that is different than the standard summer golf tournament. How is it different? The event has regularly incorporated its beneficiaries, the kids, into the fabric of the event at registration, in on-course activities, and speaking at dinner. Sponsors have the opportunity to interact with program participants, ask them questions and learn more about the influence of The First Tee. In the end, its about the kids!

This year, efforts were expanded to get additional kids involved. “Planning transportation and logistics with our new partners was one of the first steps this year. Raising money from the event is very important, but providing opportunities to the students, many new to golf, to learn more about the game and themselves, is also something we take very seriously,” says Chapter Executive Director Andrew Bennett.

20 students, ages 10-14 from the Chapter’s new partner organizations in Buffalo – the Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo, Westminster Community Charter School and Tapestry Charter School, will be attending and participating in a golf clinic at Park Club on May 18th from 10am-12pm. After the clinic, students will receive lunch on the patio at the club, as well as a First Tee shirt and hat.

Through support from the Buffalo Bills Youth Foundation in 2014, Westminster Community Charter School adopted The First Tee National School Program (“NSP”) and The Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo adopted The First Tee’s DRIVE Afterschool Afterschool (“DRIVE”) Program into their respective curricula. Both programs promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. Tapestry Charter school has also adopted The First Tee National School Program. The May 18th event is a great example of organizations collaborating to positively impact kids.

Bennett says, “We have a wonderful group of sponsors this year and with the kids coming to the event, it’s going to be a very special day. On behalf of our Board and event team, I’d like to recognize our Title Sponsor CCS Oncology, Presenting Sponsor Sgroi Financial, as well as ComDoc and Stahlka Insurance for their generous and continued support.”

Support for this year’s event reflects expansion efforts of the Chapter throughout WNY, including the development of programs in Tonawanda and Buffalo. The First Tee of WNY is focused on providing learning opportunities to young people from all backgrounds. Bennett believes, “Our programs offer a unique opportunity to bring kids together from all corners of our community to learn from each other and in the end, make our community stronger.”
