Protect Yourself This Summer from Melanoma

Melanoma Checkup

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer rated as the most dangerous form of cancer. The cancerous growth develops when there is damage to the un-repairable cells on the skin often caused by ultraviolet radiation from the sun. This exposure leads to mutations or genetic defects resulting in malignant tumors.

The primary cause of melanoma cancer is mainly by intense, occasional ultra violet exposure that leads to sunburns, mostly occurring to those people who are genetically susceptible to the disease.

It is estimated that melanoma kills an estimate of about 10,130 people in the United States annually.

This type of cancer is easily curable if detected early, but can also lead to death if it advances and spread to other parts of the body becoming hard to cure.

Warning Signs of Melanoma Cancer

The common warning signs of melanoma are moles and brown spots and growth on the skin; if there are many moles on the skin, it can be a sure sign of the disease. Therefore, it is important to understand your skin so that you can identify the symptoms quickly before they can escalate. To recognize these early symptoms, here are the ABCDE signs you should know:

Asymmetry

If you draw a line through the middle of a harmless mole, the two sides will match but if the two sides of the mole do not match, that is asymmetrical, this could be a typical warning sign of melanoma.

Border

Another test to identify a melanoma is to check the borders of a mole. If the edges are uneven and appear notched, this could be a danger sign.

Color

If the moles are signs for early melanoma cancer, the color of the moles is always the same, often a single shade of brown but in some instances red, white or blue.

Diameter

Malignant moles are larger in diameter as compared to benign or harmless moles. Therefore, if you spot this sign, seek medical attention immediately.

Evolving

A mole that changes in shape, color or elevation is not an ordinary mole; it could be a sign of melanoma cancer. If you experience such, it is important, to seek further advice as it could be a sign of the disease.
